(AGAIN)

Hopefully it'll be a yet more productive year.

My boyfriend got home on first January but he and I only got to meet up again only yesterday. My God how I missed him.

I met him at about half past seven in the evening, and I was just finished my big fortnightly stock purchasing. I had Flatwhite at Starbucks earlier.
We went to Gloria Jean's; I had Cappuccino and he Coffee? Vanilla Chiller. I didn't know how long it's been but there's a 50% discount for Mandiri credit card holders for their drinks and 25% for their food. And their food wasn't even expensive. What can I say?--I'm a coffee fan.

There are in general three coffee shops I'm a fan of, Starbucks, Excelso, and Gloria Jean's. A cup of Cappuccino at Starbucks (tall) is 25K (VAT included), Excelso 25K (net), and Gloria Jean's 20K (net). I'm positive from now on I'll be posting more frequently.

I've had my share of going into different relationships and breaking up throughout this whole year, to the point where I've begun feeling rather inert to start another one. It would take more than a Rilke to persuade me otherwise. The other day Jensen asked me, "Do you feel like everything around you is changing, but you are frozen in time?" It takes one to know one, he as well said.

But that is that, and this is this. I'm thinking I must've been such a bastard--one way or another, I do expect people to read into the little, reductive aspects behind every of my actions.

Lately I've been rather fretful of my skin and shape. I'm subscribing to a local gym and striving for a six-pack, and hopefully by midyear 2008 it'll all come to fruition. I've always practised skin-care since I was small; I used to always use either Shiseido The Skincare or Lancome Hydra Zen (along the way I've tried Clinique, H2O, SK-II, and Shiseido Men). But I figured either too expensive now that I've gotta earn them on my own; and thus I gave Missha a try. I've done a little research on the company. Their approach, which has given them quite a success outside Indonesia, has been complimented by many. Somehow I don't find their skincare regimens all too convincing, though. But anyway, I bought myself the entire Illuminating regimen, and it's great.

Christmas

Hello:

It's been a while since I last posted anything here. I'm in Indonesia; and the rest are from Australia, Japan, and Singapore. I'm also happy that the card didn't get lost in the way. And also because he told me that his mom was all "ooooh what a nice card."
Today I'll be going to Bali. Well, that's the plan anyway. The thing is, now I'm not sure I would. I got a cold, and I've been vomitting a lot; also, my throat is sore like crap. At this rate, I really don't feel like going. Of course, I couldn't refuse it as I'll get paid for it, although I couldn't ask for much either. Only problem is she told me to come over there and get the photographs she wanted me to scan and use as materials for the calendar--what if it turns out that her photos are small, or not good enough, or bent, or something. See it this way: photographs are META-Reality, so scanned photographs are META-META-Reality, and I don't know--I wouldn't expect them to be of brilliant quality. Well, I have yet to see her.
By the way, I wanna recommend this CD Damien Rice - O. JRE)

Linux (x86)

Linux (PPC)

Solaris (SPARC)

Solaris (x86)

FreeBSD

Macintosh

While OpenOffice.org is not the only office productivity suite to support OpenDocument -- accompanied by KOffice, IBM Workplace, and many others, many are optimist that OpenOffice.org is on its path toward being the most popular office suite the world has ever seen, having Novell, Red Hat, Debian, Propylon, and Intel, as well as a slew of independent progremmers involved in its development and goverments to start using it instead of the presently more popular office suite Microsoft Office due to the matter of proprietary against non proprietary formats -- Massachusetts in particular being the most vigorous proponent.

OpenOffice.org also got a bit of a boost earlier this month when Sun and Google announced a long-range technology partnership. Although the pair have been short on specifics, speculation remains strong that StarOffice, or the open-format OpenOffice.org offshoot, might be the foundation for additional Google Web services in the future.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 isn't totally reliant on OpenDocument, or even a nebulous Google-Sun deal, to make news, however. This version of the suite features a new database component -- dubbed "OpenOffice.org Base" -- major improvements in compatibility with Microsoft Office document formats, a redesigned user interface, and improvement in its export-to-PDF feature, which now gives users more control over the quality and size of the resulting PDF files.

That is quite an invaluable feature that Microsoft Office has not yet incorporated I might add, and I use it quite a lot. The next version of Redmond's suite, called Office 12 for now, will also offer PDF export (reminds you of the war between Microsoft XML and Adobe PDF some time around two years ago -- they might simply decided to include that feature to add as a value to contend with OpenOffice.org 2.0), the company confirmed three weeks ago.

"OpenOffice 2.0 is a big deal…this isn't some new, untried technology," said Tim Bray, one of the creators of XML, and now an employee at Sun, in a statement. "You can get your desktop work done without having to pay onerous up-front licensing costs and without having your data locked up in somebody else's file format. Why would you work any other way?"

OpenOffice.org 2.0 can be downloaded free of charge from the OpenOffice.org Web site.

<img style="border: 0; Making a game is my dream. It's also where everything I want to do falls into place. I crave to study music, graphics, and literature formally; I don't know yet how I'd study film-making as performing arts would as well force me to study acting.

I have most of the concepts in mind already. Presently I'm kind of writing a novel with the story I want to use for the game in the future. I even have a sketchbook dedicated for this novel, wherein I've drawn most of the characters in different poses. I'm not sure if I won't regret if I tell the concept of the story and the plots in here, so I'll keep it for myself and for a few closest friends I have.

I want to make a game that rocks from every noticable aspect. Any help would be appreciated. This sure is so high of a dream, but it doesn't hurt to dream high.

*sticks tongue*

Night Passages

Things haven't been too accommodating lately. I write this merely to speak my thoughts up about the recent uproar around this topic and probably let my friends know about this as well. I haven't read really much about the details either.

Massachusetts has somewhat decided to abandon Microsoft Office and switch to open-source software, OpenOffice.org for its support for OpenDocument formats (ODF):

The OpenDocument format (ODF), short for the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications, is an open document file format for saving and exchanging editable office documents such as text documents (including memos, reports, and books), spreadsheets, charts, and presentations. This standard was developed by the OASIS industry consortium, based upon the XML-based file format originally created by OpenOffice.org. The standard was publicly developed by a variety of organizations, is publicly accessible, and can be implemented by anyone without restriction. The OpenDocument format is intended to provide an open alternative to proprietary document formats including the popular DOC, XLS, and PPT formats used by Microsoft Office, as well as Microsoft Office Open XML format (this latter format has various licensing requirements that prevent some competitors from using it). Organizations and individuals that store their data in an open format such as OpenDocument avoid being locked in to a single software vendor, leaving them free to switch software if their current vendor goes out of business, raises their prices, changes their software, or changes their licensing terms to something less favorable. OpenDocument is the only standard for editable office documents that has been vetted by an independent recognized standards body, has been implemented by multiple vendors, and can be implemented by any supplier (including proprietary software vendors and developers using the GNU GPL). -- Wikipedia

Alongside Massachusetts is Europe Union (EU). I read that Massachusetts' migration proposal was loosely based on EU's anyway. The migration sure is going to cost more, regardless of OpenOffice.org being free, than upgrading to the newer version of Microsoft Office--which is what they had been using for over a decade, but think about how newer versions of Microsoft Office applications are not really capable of opening documents of earlier versions: governments keep documents for a very long time, if not forever, as they contain essential records which will still be used a lot even in the future. With XML-based formats and open-source software, anyone can make a filter for the documents. That alone is a reason enough for us to migrate to that standard.

You're probably wondering why they chose OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office. That's probably because Microsoft simply said, "maybe someday," regarding to whether they will support ODF and as said in Wikipedia: Microsoft Office Open XML, despite being named so, has various licensing requirements that prevent some competiors from using it. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1829355,00.asp
Governments are not supposed to store their data in a form with potential licensing encumbrances. Even if the license grants exceptions for government use, doing so causes Network Effects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect), which give the format an unfair market advantage over its rivals. Since Microsoft has already been proven to possess monopoly power, this is doubly undesirable.

On the same note, this might not be visible to these people but we who live in this third world including Indonesia find Microsoft Office quite expensive, regardless of its worth. We are apparently used to buy pirated copies that we all find it common that everyone here is able to have Microsoft Office 2003 Professional installed in his computer--you can get a copy of it for about $ 2 US anywhere in the city. Alongside the recent increase of 100% on fuel rates, continual decrease on ID Rupiah's value against US Dollar's, and the low salary rates, OpenOffice.org being FREE and open-source is apparently a perfect solution for us all, except not many of us know what that is, or never heard of it, or/and not sure about its quality--I really think the phrase "Microsoft Office's alternative" is a tad degrading for OpenOffice.org as it is mature, complete, easy-to-use, sophisticated, and working. Nonetheless, they should do some campaign in Indonesia.

Corel WordPerfect apparently has been there for a long time and has its niche as a number one Microsoft Office alternative. But it seems to be content with it and is not striving at all to compete with Microsoft Office itself. Moreover: regardless of its looks, the way it works looks really primitive and quite a trivial program I should say. How is it going to be highly compatible with Microsoft Office file formats if it doesn't even filter its own file formats properly. As I said, I'm not a power user in this department, but I do have to write many things, for school mostly. I have tried both Corel WordPerfect and OpenOffice.org, and so far, I've been much more comfortable with the latter program. WordPerfect gave me enough problems I ended up uninstalling it in rage.

I like OpenOffice.org 2 much more than version 1. It's almost like an entirely different thing. Seriously, it loads much faster than version 1, looks elegant, and has really nice and smart features that once you use them you'll be content and wouldn't possibly migrate to any other programs without those features!

The flow didn't give me the opportunity to tell about this earlier so, here I want to give an example of why ODF is cool: since you are able to create your own filter for ODF (or use premade API's, which should now be everywhere on the net), you can directly, say, parse an entire essay on OpenDocument Text (ODT) to something immediately readable by web browsers! I'm interested in implementing that on my school project myself.

Strange Day 8

<div style="background-position: right bottom; Anyway, I checked it out in the end. The thing is, instead of modifying a premade source code, it was made like that that my tags would override Friendster's existing CSS tags, which made it kind of confusing if you're going to do some major change--I like consistency, that's the main thing. I refused to work on it in the end, ha. Creating your own site and its CSS is an exciting thing, but reading into someone else's CSS and rebuilding it to something different is tiring.

I got a silver bracelet earlier today. They have some of the best pastries and coffees I've ever had! I've also met so many nice people there--lemme name a few nicknames: Catz and Initial`d (the awesome founders!), terin^, zhen^shanmei, Crayz, CarolineL, and many more. A must-visit place, ya know!
Oh, and they have a cool forum too!

Strange Day 7: Bewitched

<div style="background-position: right bottom; Ha!

I kind of skimmed off through an electronic collaborative fantasy novel that Emmy gave me the url to earlier, which reminded me again how much I had been wanting to heck write the story that's been in my mind for months off of it. Although I ended up only working on my ER Diagram. It's just the draft diagram for the existing system--the diagram for the proposed system would follow later in the next phase of SDLC. It should sound like I was only doing one single thing, although in fact, I simply had to do adjustments and revisions on the narratives to um... make it better--the diagram kind of gave me more room to think. And... tsk, more essays to revise or even recompose soon.

Back to the writing thing I kind of left off abruptly earlier, so far I've determined and written them characters and plots in my uber cool binder. I actually have also written one chapter in there, which wasn't too shabby for a draft. And I've drawn some of the characters, huh?! Oh yeah, that reminds me of the entire idea and so far has just been an idea and I'm sure will just be an idea for a quite some time of making a manga with my friend, Fina--can't say it's her fault though... well, probably it is, but not entirely.

I'm gonna sleep straight off after finishing this post. I need to.

Has anyone of you ever heard of this Norwegian jazz diva Silje Nergaard? She's cool. Nothing like the um overdone, monotonous, though blissful, and boring Sinead O'Connor, Silje has a catchy and exquisite voice, which, combined with her intellectual interpretations, would make you want to listen to it again and again. That's probably the most cliché comment to a musician I've ever made, but every singe word is true, at least for me. I have her album Port of Call, which is nice. I saw in her official site that she has released a new album, Nightwatch. It has a nice CD cover, haha, better than Port of Call's.

I actually don't quite know where to start. So let's start with my study--which reminds me why this blog was named Uni Boy. I'm only on two classes for this term, simply due to the unavailability of classes I haven't taken prior to graduation, and while I was able to take more, the other open classes just weren't appealing to me. They're Network Programming and Project: System Development. To those of you who might be curious of why I'm taking Project: System Development again--yes, again, for the second time, it's becaue I failed the first one. My computer just died at the right time, which reminds me of how many times I have changed computers this year. Four times.

I reckon I've not been making much progress recently. I read my textbooks regularly, but that's just not enough for me. I've done all of my assignments, including unofficial ones, which were actually my friend's essays that the lecturer sent me to revise/recompose. If I still had that much to do, now I wouldn't be blogging here. My current project is still the personal on-demand search engine thing I call NetKite, which is in Java, and still very much untouched, and probably trying to read into SpyBot, which is in C, and is horrid, for me, seriously. What else? Went rafting with friends and uni staff several days ago. It was fun, but I'm just not in the mood to get into the details at the moment. Man, writing this alone is griping, let alone reading. Oh, that rhymes!

Now let me write about something more pleasant. Lately I've been in some fairy tale, melancholic mood--just the perfect mood to write. I blame it on the songs I've been listening to, and probably also the pix I've been stuck staring at a lot lately. Has anyone of you ever heard of this painter John William Waterhouse? It was like, I came across one of his paintings almost randomly, stared at it for a while, fascinated, and was just so inspired to write, and I did went straight off to write the heck off of my mind. But it wasn't enough. I'm still trying to kind of sort my mind out.

Another thing I've been thinking about lately is learning violin--yes, slacking off all days make me think a lot after all. Since I have so much time in hand, I just thought it's just the right opportunity for me to learn at least one musical instrument.

Here's the violin I want. It's not cheap, yet not pricey either.
Cremona sv-1400
<img style="BORDER-RIGHT: rgb(204,204,204) 2px solid; There was this new Hypermart opening several days ago and I, initially, simply intended to check the place out with Steve and had dim sum at Fu Yuan--awesome dim sum (except the cheong fun), awesome price, although in the end, we, instead of the size or the completeness of the place, ended up fascinating each other with how much we spent. There were loads of discounts too. The place was so crammed out we found it difficult to even move around. All of the 30 cashiers had amazingly long queues; and while we were in the queue, the queue for the cashier next to ours was forked up into two branches and I spotted two women, probably housewives, fighting. That's probably why I rarely attend this kind of event--my side conscious takes place, it knows I hate being in a crowded place.

If you're curious of why all of the pix in this blog which are hosted on grobyc.net are not accessible, it's due to my misinterpretation of the contract term--I thought it was yearly, but apparently I forgot I chose the monthly one.. um, and I haven't paid last month's bill. I'm going to go to the bank later before going to uni, so hopefully these pix would be viewable tomorrow.

I fell over the stairs yesterday and my back and right arm have been aching like blah. Hail Counterpain!--that balm works, despite only temporarily.

Hey, I met two hot, pretty, sexy, and charming Japanese demoiselles (double sexy) at the department store--I've told Jensen about this. Judging from their appearances, I believe they're around 27-30 years old. We happened to be in the same section a couple of times and had some short conversation. They're two of those few who came and did not buy any cheap TV or DVD player.

I'm done here. I'm gonna get ready to go to campus. However, I'm feeling inclined to direct-link to two or three new pix of Emma Shapplin I just saw at 'voice of eternity - the Emma Shapplin message board':
<img style="BORDER-RIGHT: rgb(204,204,204) 2px solid; The second pic where she looks like wearing a 'gladiator' outfit reminds me of Sarah Brightman wearing a metalwork 'gladiator' outfit in her La Luna tour. The third pic where she's wearing a huge... bustle?--anyway, Sarah wears this kind of outfit a lot in her tours. Anyone know what that lower garment she's wearing is called with? It looks like one of those rack things you fasten about the waste and it has ribs on it--meant for holding out the skirt to give one a bell look. It might still be called a bustle but I think that only refers to the frame.

Strange Day 5

Da dara!
Today I've been repeatedly listening to this piece entitled Figlio Perduto, sung by Sarah Brightman for the album La Luna while studying. It has a kind of gloomy, dark, Gregorian, mystical feeling in it. It is, indeed, strange. I always get a kind of goosebump whenever I listen to this particular piece; yet I'm so fond of it. So basically you should try this song. I myself am fond of listening to 'new' sounds. Don't you also think that it's such a wonder that we can listen to so many music from all over the world - people write music, people sing, people play instruments, people record, people arrange, people distribute, etc.
This song is based on Allegretto of Beethoven's 7th symphony, while the lyric, written by Chiara Ferrau, is based on the poem Erlkönig (1782) from the German author Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). The word "Erlkönig" comes from the Danish word "ellenkonge" and means "King of the Elves". I don't quite know if there was any moral provided in the story of the lyric; it's about a father trying to soothe his son knowing that the king of elf will take this tender boy's life away from him. Dark, it is.
I also have another version of this lyric, a piece written by Schubert, performed by a renowned baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, although I really think Figlio Perduto does have more in it for me to like than Schubert's Erlkönig.
And ladies and gets, as always, here I present screenshots from the dvd of La Luna Live in Concert.
<img style="border: 2px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); Actually I didn't quite like this one when it had colors - which was the reason I made it duotone. The woman in the thing is Emma Shapplin, a celebrated classical-crossover diva from France. I'm aware of the fact that this thing looks cheap, but nonetheless it looks vibrant for me.

Her music is pretty much about her imaginations and quite fairy tale-like (it does remind you of Sarah Brightman, doesn't it?) She is a coloratura soprano that can jump between octaves effortlessly. She also wrote most of the songs in her latest album, Etterna, which was released on 2002. I'm eagerly waiting for her next album, really.
As always, here are some screenshots of Emma I took from various videos.

I could've written more about her but considering how sore my eyes are already at the moment...

SoftWarrrr!

Alright, so I'm situated as a mediocre Java coder who has a very slow and unreliable Internet connection. I mean the majority who program in teams that deliver enterprise Java applications on the J2EE platform," wrote Gerard Fernandes.
I can't agree more, but it's a great editor nonetheless. Netbeans can suck beans. At the moment I don't really have many choices; I have bought JBuilder 10 twice and none of the copies was installable.
My other development stuff are probably just (drumroll/laughter) Macromedia Dreamweaver, lcc-win32, and a few other minor stuff.
Zzz...
Initially I wanted to write a full-range software preferences of mine, but I'm suddenly feeling sleepy. It was fun I guess, especially with my favourite people around.
No class for today.
I felt lazy to work on my project earlier; the blames go to my webhosting. It's a sucky one, but I'll save it for later because I suspect one of these days I'd be mad at it again.
So, I've been listening to Nightwish and Sarah Brightman's older album, Dive, a lot recently. Nightwish' Once is really cool. The entirety of this album is like listening to Howard Shore with metal/rock kinda beats and a female singer who has an operatic voice type I like. I don't quite like their Century Child album though; but no comment on it.
Here are three shots I took from their Dead Boys Poem live video.

These ones are from Nemo video clip.

At first I didn't know I'd like this album Dive since it contains mostly pop songs with her older singing style, which I wasn't used to; but it proved wrong - I love this album. Simple pop songs, energetic, catchy, something around these lines. Here are some shots I took from the dvd of La Luna Live in Concert where she sang Siren, a shiny vocalise from the album Dive.

This one, where she sings Whiter Shade of Pale, is also from the same dvd. There's a silver rain right before this scene.

This one is the duet between Sarah and Josh Groban in the song There for Me. Josh has a really sweet, rich, yet powerful voice. And he's a baritone.

Yes, I love music. If I was given a chance to study music, I'd probably abandon computer science!
Currently I have three projects; I'm so frustated sometimes I feel I need to murder seven Kyles (and revive them for future use). And I have OpenOffice.org's Developer's Guide to read.
